I want to sponsor my parents or grandparents to Canada. How can I sponsor my parents or grandparents to Canada?
Each year Canada opens the program and interested Canadian permanent residents or Canadian citizens submit the interest to sponsor form online at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s website (IRCC).
Then IRCC invites a limited number of interested sponsors to apply under the parents/grandparents sponsorship program.
The sponsors will complete two applications:
– The sponsorship application and
– The permanent residence application

Who is eligible to sponsor parents or grandparents?
Find out if you meet the income requirements:
You can sponsor your own parents and grandparents if:
- You are invited to apply,
- you’re at least 18 years old
- you live in Canada
- you are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- you have enough money to financially support your parents/grandparents:
- to show that you have enough, you will have to provide your proof of income for the last 3 taxation years before the date of your application
- If you do not meet the minmum income requirment then you may have a spouse or common-law partner co-sign to combine your incomes
- you meet all other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations
How long am I responsible for my parents financially?
You and your co-signer are promising IRCC that you will provide financial support to your family members for 20 years.
Even if you and your spouse/common-law partner (co-signer) are divorced or separated, their financial undertaken/ promise is not diminished.

If you have been invited to sponsor your parents to Canada, you need to meet the income requirement: You, the sponsor and your co-signer, if you have one; must prove that you have enough income to support all the people you will be financially responsible when you become a sponsor. You will need to count yourself in the number of people you will be responsible for financially.
How do I calculate my family size to sponsor my parents and grandparents?
For example, if you are married and have one child and are invited to sponsor your parents (mother and father). The total number of five (5) people you will be financially responsible for.

What if I do not meet the income requirements?
If you do not meet the income requirements, then you can have a co-signer on your sponsorship application.
Who can be my co-signer on my application to sponsor my parents and grandparents?
Your co-signer can be your spouse or common-law partner regardless of how long you have been married or in a common-law relationship.
Your co-signer must provide proof of income for the last 3 taxation years before the date of your application.

As your co-signer, your spouse or common-law partner must:
- meet the same eligibility requirements as you, the sponsor,you are invited to apply:
- you are at least 18 years old
- you live in Canada
- you are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- you have enough money to support your sponsor’s parents/grandparents
- agree to, for a period of time, financially take care of and provide for the basic needs of the person you are sponsoring
You and your co-signer are equally liable if these obligations aren’t performed even if you are divorced or separated.
